If your organization is one of the many considering upgrading their Livelink® implementation to Livelink® 9.5, or possibly the soon to be released Livelink® 9.6, you should be aware that there is a proven methodology for a successful upgrade.

The 9.5 upgrade is considerably more complex than previous upgrades. Areas of complexity include the Livelink® index configuration, audit record conversion, multi-language support, web server vs. application server requirements and module compatibility. Another key concern is the performance of Livelink® 9.5 in your specific environment.

The good news is that following a proven upgrade methodology can greatly reduce your risk and provide a more accurate and efficient upgrade. The Syntergy upgrade methodology was developed based on the experiences of upgrading Livelink® over the past 10 years.

Does Your Organization Have the Right Livelink® Architecture Strategy?

Maintaining or improving the performance of Livelink® is an issue many organizations will have to face when moving to Livelink® 9.5. Open Text has documented that the performance of Livelink® 9.5 may be less than earlier versions. There are many criteria to look at when analyzing performance but the most important is your implementation architecture.

Livelink® architecture consists of several components. They include:

  • Unix vs. Windows Operating System

  • Vertical or Horizontal Clustering

  • Livelink® Thread Configuration vs. CPU capacity

  • Supporting Applications: Web Servers, Application Servers, Database Server

  • Load Balancer Approach

  • Livelink® Index Distribution

Being able to configure all of these items correctly requires extensive knowledge and experience. The current architecture courses available have not been updated to account for changes in Livelink® 9.5. This article will examine the key issues associated with Livelink® architecture and provide the insight your organization needs to maintain or even improve your performance.

Read the full story to find out what are the key considerations, what tools are available and what techniques are the most efficient when implementing each of these levels of integration.
9.5 Livelink® Search Index Configuration

Livelink® 9.5 search index has a new configuration that organizations need to understand as part of their upgrade planning. The new approach uses partitions that allow you to divide the index into multiple segments. The primary advantage of this new approach is the ability to increase search and index performance by distributing the index across multiple index processes each with their own computing resources. A secondary advantage is that backing up and restoring the index can be faster since the files are segmented.

The use of partitions adds more complexity to architecting the search index. Open Text provides an index migration tool that will analyze your pre 9.5 indexes and make recommendations for memory requirements based on the number of partitions selected. You can run the tool to do the analysis and then say no when it prompts you to do the actual migration.

There is very important information you will need to consider; such as your current index size, your estimated growth per year and your existing hardware. Read the full article to find out what are the most important numbers to know to configure your Livelink® 9.5 search index.

Syntergy has added load testing to the tool set that is used during architecture analysis and performance tuning services. Performance tuning can be a relatively subjective function when it is based on results conducted in test labs, estimated usage patterns and fixed data. Load testing takes away the subjective nature of Livelink® performance tuning by allowing simulated usage environments to be measured against various configurations.

Contact Syntergy to find out more about load testing and how our architecture analysis and performance tuning services can improve your Livelink® response times.

For those of you that write LAPI code for Livelink® it can be next to impossible to figure out why things are not working the way they should or what the error you are getting back really means. There is a very simple trick that experienced Livelink® developers use to make the debugging process much easier.
